Australian Migration Overview

Australia is a stable, culturally diverse and democratic society country. The law of migration and citizenship is a matter of parliament in Australia. The immigration and citizenship minister is the responsible person to administrative law and policy relating to migration and citizenship.

The minister does this through the Department of Home Affairs. Department of Home Affairs provides advice and background information to the minister and is influential mainly in determining new immigration laws and policies.

Migration History

Transported criminals were the basis of the first migration from Europe. The driving part of Australia’s migration program followed the end of World War II. In 1788 some 1, 60,000 convicts were shipped to the Australian colonies. In 1970s free immigrations also began coming to Australia. In the 1980s the rapid growth of the wool industry created enormous demands of labour which generated increases in the migration from the United Kingdom.1851 to 1860 is known as a Gold rush period in Australia. During this time the most significant number of Chinese migrated to Australia.
