In Australia skilled migration is one of the best opportunities for skilled worker to gain entry. Under the Australian general skilled migrations schemes, Skilled migrant and skilled worker application can use their qualification, work experience and language ability to satisfy Australian immigration requirements and live and work in Australia.

General skilled migration is the largest component of the skilled stream of Australian immigration program. The planning level for the GSM was 76 900 in 2006- 2007 financial year. The current GSM was introduced on 1 September 2007. All previous GSM subclasses are now closed to new applications.

Most of the GSM Subclasses are based in points system. An application for an offshore visa which achieves a score below the pass mark (but above the pool mark) will be held in reserve for up to two years after it is assessed. If the pass mark is lowered during this period and the applicant's score is at, or above, the new pass mark, the application will proceed. If it is not, the application will be refused at the end of the two years.

From 1 September 2007 applicants for all GSM visas can apply online (eVisa). All applications lodged online for a GSM visa that require sponsorship by a relative must also have the sponsorship form (Form 1277) completed online. Migration Agents can also lodge applications online.
